Discover the true story of author Frances Hodgson Burnett’s real ‘secret garden’, which inspired her classic children’s book at the Secret Garden Immersive Exhibition.
A magical experience awaits you at The Garden Museum, just a stone’s throw away from Lambeth Palace.
Here, you’ll get to explore a myriad of illustrations from the past 100 years, depicting the secret garden and the profound effect it has had on the lives of the characters in the book.
The Secret Garden, first published in 1911, tells the story of 10-year-old orphan, Mary Lennox. She was sent to live in Misselthwaite Manor, a mysterious Yorkshire estate owned by her widowed uncle.
While living there, she discovers the key to a long-abandoned hidden walled garden. She then begins to take care of the plants in the garden and starts to bring her bedridden cousin, Colin to the secret garden.
Spending time in the garden strengthens their bond, helps Mary overcome her grief, restores Colin’s health and mends broken family ties.
Relive the experience in the immersive exhibition, suitable for all ages, with interactive games and trails for children to learn about plants, animals and stories found in The Secret Garden novel.
Visitors can also try their hand at gardening! Besides browsing illustrations inspired by The Secret Garden, the exhibition will also give you a glimpse of author Frances Hodgson Burnett’s gardens at Great Maytham Hall, Kent.
