My Neighbour Totoro on Stage What’s Hot | 23rd May 2022 | 3min read The celebrated 1988 Hayao Miyazaki masterpiece, ‘My Neighbour Totoro’ is coming to London to make its stage debut. Hooray! Made possible by Executive Producer Joe Hisaishi and the Royal Shakespeare Company in collaboration with Improbable and Nippon TV, the stage adaptation of the beloved coming-of-age film will run from the 8th of October, 2022 until the 21st of January, 2023 at Barbican Theatre. Set in 1950s Japan, the story revolves around the magical world of sisters, Satsuki and Mei. They move into an old countryside house with their father one summer whilst their mother recovers from a long-term illness in a hospital nearby. The siblings discover friendly spirits in their new home and meet otherworldly characters like Totoro and Catbus. Witness their exciting adventures and be moved by this heartwarming tale of childhood, magical moments and natural wonder. This landmark new adaptation is written by playwright Tom Morton-Smith and directed by Phelim McDermott with production design by Tom Pye, costume design by Kimie Nakano, and lighting design by Jessica Hung Han Yun. It will also feature puppetry created by Basil Twist and music from Joe Hisaishi’s iconic score performed live.
